Remix Notes
For the Remix assignment, I chose to remix a live jazz performance into a hip hop beat. It is a very slow jazz song performed by a group of three. The song includes sax, bass, and drums, but heavily focuses on the sax. This proved to be more challenging than I originally thought but it was very fun and a good learning experience. Originally, I wanted to make a tempo map of the jazz performance to then add a beat around and add lyrics too. After making the tempo map, I realized just how hard it would still be because of how often the song changes tempo (drifts between 63-70 bpm). So, I ended up scrapping that idea and instead decided to chop up the jazz recording and make a beat out of it instead. This was a much easier task especially because the jazz song is abundant with long sustained notes. This made it very easy to work with as I could treat each note as a one shot and play it in almost any tempo due to their length. I started with the drums and made a basic beat in Battery 4. Then I loaded the chopped sample into battery to control it with midi after picking out the exact chops to use. I let the beat play while I messed with my keyboard seeing what worked until I found a new melody to use. After that, I was very excited with how it came out and added bass as a counter melody. After that, I wanted to fill more space in the mix, so I added a synth to play chords that complement the melody. After that I mixed volumes until they sounded good then sub mixed their levels using the Pro Limiter. It has a True Peak of -0.8 and Integrated LUFS at -15.5.
