Location Recording Notes

For my location recording assignment, I chose to record the Orange High School concert band.  I graduated from Orange and am close to the band director, so he allowed me to record one of their practice sessions before their concert in a few weeks.  I used a distant, spaced pair mic setup in the Orange High School auditorium.  I felt this would be a great technique to use as the auditorium has been made to sound very good and this technique picks up a lot of the room.  I placed them about 4-5 feet from the band, and about 11-12 feet apart.  This makes the stereo image very wide which I felt was a cool effect when recording a whole band.  It allows each section of instruments to come through smoothly and there is never one instrument too loud.  I used the MXL 2010 condenser microphones to record this as I felt the SPL (sound pressure level) would get high considering the large number of brass instruments in the band.  I did want to use a ribbon mic at first, but I decided that worrying about peaks would be a lot harder to manage in songs with large dynamic shifts.  If I could do this recording over again, I would add a few more mics for the percussion to cut through the mix.
